Guide to the Native Fishes of Idaho
Dr. Richard L. Wallace, Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of Idaho and Donald W. Zaroban, Curator of Fishes at the Orma J. Smith Museum of Natural History are authoring the new book concerning Idaho's forty-three species of native fish. This book will update the native fish data presented in The Fishes of Idaho, published in 1978.
Each species account will include the common and scientific names, descriptions and illustrations of key physical characteristics and overall appearance, habits and habitats, common foods, and an updated distribution map. The distribution data will be based on the most comprehensive database available concerning native fish occurrence in Idaho. Comments concerning the current population status of each species will be included.
The book's unique contribution will be that all the distribution data is based on specimens held in museum collections. The fish occurrence data used to produce the Fishes of Idaho provided by Dr. Wallace, will be complimented by the Orma J. Smith Museum of Natural History collection and database. Data from other museums in the nation that hold Idaho fish will also be included. This combined database offers thousands of new records.
Cutthroat Trout License Plate
The cutthroat trout is Idaho's official state fish and joins the elk and bluebird as symbols of Idaho's wildlife. The cutthroat trout design was commissioned by the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation, a non-profit corporation whose mission is to protect and sustain Idaho's fishing, hunting and wildlife heritage.
Proceeds from the cutthroat trout license plate support the Idaho Department of Fish and Game's nongame and watchable wildlife fund as well as programs in the departments of Agriculture and Parks and Recreation. The Nongame Program is funded almost exclusively by donations and Idaho Wildlife Special License Plate sales. This program is responsible for managing and conserving Idaho's 470 nongame species, providing conservation education for citizens, financial support to manage nongame wildlife, and enhancing Idaho's economy by attracting tourists to view our wildlife.
The plates cost an additional $35 plus $25 extra for renewal. Idaho citizens can also purchase a "sample plate" for $30.00. $22.50 of each new plate purchase, $13.50 of each renewal, and $20 of each sample plate purchase price goes to the Nongame Program; $2.50 of each new plate and $1.50 of each renewal goes to the Parks and Recreation non-motorized boating access facilities for anglers. It is expected that the cutthroat plate will bring in an additional $375,000 to the Nongame Program each year.
